Small Business Growing Online Safely
11:20 AM - 12:00 PM PDT
Track 1: Planning It: Planning Success Stories with Small Business Programs
Donna Childs, Founder and CEO, Prisere LLC
When your community is declared a federal disaster area, your life is turned upside down. Parts of your life that were on auto-pilot, like commuting to work, require intense mental focus as all of your normal routines are disrupted. I dealt with major disasters around the world on a daily basis when I was a senior executive of the world’s largest reinsurance company.
But it wasn’t until my neighborhood was declared Ground Zero of one of the worst disasters in history, that I really came to appreciate what resilience really means and how my professional and personal experience give me the opportunity to be of service: to create a safer, more resilient world. And that is why I founded Prisere LLC.
Consider that most of the world lacks risk mapping and risk modeling tools essential to insure resilience. And in the developed countries where such tools exist, emerging risks and a changing climate are rendering them obsolete. Prisere LLC aims to fill that gap by building capacity for climate and disaster resilience with improved risk tools, including risk communications, risk mapping and software apps, technical training and consulting services.
My educational background includes a B.S. from Yale University, an M.A. in International Economics and Finance from Brandeis University, an MBA from Columbia Business School and, most importantly of all, OPM - Owner President Management of Harvard Business School for the founders of fast-track entrepreneurial ventures. I began my career as a research associate at HBS where I developed educational materials on insurance and risk management, so it was a joy to return to the campus where it all started to re-tool for the challenges that Prisere aims to address.
In my personal time, I enjoy cooking (I completed four certificate programs at the French Culinary Institute), writing (I am the author of a book on - what else? - small business disaster resilience) and my two cocker spaniels, Coco and Henry.
Sequoyah Lindsey-Taylor, FDNP, ASE Wellness
As a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, I assist women to discover and decode their Genetic Genius; so that they can be happy, healthy and gain harmony. We do this via genetic and functional lab testing; so that you can stop guessing about your wellness and make your healthcare customized and individualized to YOU.
Most of my days are spent in the health & wellness realm; spending hours studying genetics, nutrition, and other areas of the human body. But, when there is a global pandemic that happens, and you then have to pivot to the online space to service your clients; you quickly learn that cybersecurity is an important aspect of your business. Finding ways to secure client's private information is important for safety, privacy and even trust reasons. Utilizing programs and software that can assist you with this task is vital and pivotal to have success in this area of your business. As a CEO/Founder of a business I have found that establishing partnerships and relationships that assist you in growing your business is also key in the process of planning your success story.
My background experiences include serving in the United States Army Reserves, as well as working for the US Army Corps of Engineers. I have also attended nursing school, functional medicine training, and currently pursuing a BS degree in Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine. In my spare time, I am a mother to two daughters and I enjoy creating healthy snacks and meals for them.

Miranda Carter, Miracaza Real Estate
I spend most of my time devoted to something related to real estate/home ownership sometimes to the chagrin of my family: renovating older homes, tackling home projects, advancing knowledge of smart home technology, researching design trends, completing interior design certification, attending home shows, walking/driving by properties to learn about housing types/features or landscaping tips and gardening.
I started as a Real Estate Consultant, Auditor and Tax Preparer in the commercial real estate sector. One of the most important skills I learned was how to valuate commercial properties. This has come in very handy when working with investors and purchasing my own homes. My first home was a fixer upper and I became hooked on DIY and the beauty you can create when working on your own home. Later, when I joined a residential real estate brokerage, I was selected to join the management training program to learn how to effectively run a brokerage, train and mentor agents and how to increase customer satisfaction.
Before it was the norm, I instituted paperless transactions about 10 years ago. I love beauty, form, design and technology as it relates to real estate. I see my job as Broker as well as Settlement Coordinator is to make sure that all clients receive outstanding, awesome service in a transparent and efficient way. Our job is to eliminate surprises, ensure we’re always listening, save you money, and take of you from the beginning until after the move. I’m always looking for ways to improve our service. I know we’ve done our job well when you are an extended member of the Miracaza family.

I help them hone in on ways that they learn best. My skill is in empowering children into becoming an Honor Roll student and having high expectations for themselves regardless of labels.
